Crater of King George I

Natural Attraction // Other Natural Attraction

Description

We are in the active crater of King George (Georgios) I in position C, as it has been characterized, on the island of Nea Kameni. The central crater was created in August 1940 by two large hydrothermal explosions (with a sudden release of steam) that occurred at the top of the dome of George, which was created in 1866. The eastern edges of the crater host many fumes, with hot gases escaping at a temperature of 75 to 95 degrees Celsius. Approaching the permissible points around the crater, you can see steam coming out of the crater in some places. If you touch the rock with your hand, you will find it hot, and there is an intense odor of sulfur.
