Description

The foundation for the creation of the new port of Santorini in Athinios Bay was laid in the late 1960s. The old harbor was in Fira Bay. The sinking of the Sea Diamond cruise ship in the bay on April 5, 2007 created environmental and transportation problems in the port of Athinios and probably caused its exclusion from the harbor of refuge in the area.
