Founded in 1947, the Union of Santorini Cooperatives, or Santo, is now one of the most dynamic cooperatives in Greece, with 1200 members. Santo is committed to the preservation of local tradition and history, the protection of traditional crops, the sustainable agricultural development of the island, and the production of high quality wines and traditional local products from the Santorini Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The research and development department invests in the continuous improvement of cultivation and winemaking techniques, while preserving indigenous varieties in the nursery for study and experimental cultivation to ensure the conservation of biodiversity in Santorini vineyards. The primary sector department maintains a model organic vineyard which produces the organic monovarietal SantoWines.
