Goulas

Cultural Attraction // Castle

Description

In Emporio, in addition to its impressive castle, there is also a tower-like fortified house known as Goulas. According to I. Koumanoudis, it dates back to the 15th or 16th century, and its architecture was influenced by Theotokaki of Pyrgos. The little white church of Saint (Agia) Photini was built at the foot of Goulas. Goulas belonged to the Darzenta family and was intended to protect its members and their farmers from pirate raids. Later, Goulas became a dependency of the monastery of Saint John the Theologian (Agios Ioannis o Theologos) in Patmos, and the monks of the monastery used it as a solitary dwelling.
